How To Up Your Self Care Game This Summer

As the sun shines brighter and we enjoy more leisure time, it's essential to prioritize selfcare amidst the hustle and bustle of the summer season. This may seem a strange thing to say as surely having more time to socialise and going on holiday are selfcare activities? Yes they are, but with a busier than normal diary of social engagements and being out of our normal daily routines, selfcare can become neglected along the way can mean we don’t get the most out of our down time and set ourselves up in the right way for the busy run up to the autumn and winter seasons ahead.

By incorporating mindfulness activities into your summer selfcare routine or while on holiday, you can create moments of peace and deepen your connection with the present: meaning you reap maximum reward from your leisure time for mind, body and spirit, whilst building a daily mindfulness practice that will become your bedrock for the coming months.

Here are some simple yet effective mindfulness activities to help you cultivate serenity and fully enjoy your summer adventures:

1 — Morning Meditation

Morning Meditation: Start your day with a mindful meditation session to set a positive tone. Get outside early in the morning, find a quiet spot, sit comfortably, and close your eyes. Focus on your breath, observing the inhalation and exhalation without judgment. Allow your thoughts to come and go, gently bringing your attention back to your breath whenever distractions arise. Notice the sounds around you, the movement of the warm air on your skin and savour being in the moment.

2 — Beach Walking Meditation

If you're fortunate enough to be near a beach, take advantage of the serene surroundings. Take a leisurely stroll along the shoreline, feeling the warm sand beneath your feet and the gentle rhythm of the waves. Pay attention to the sensation of each step and the sound of the ocean. Engage your senses fully and let nature's tranquillity wash over you, allowing any stress or worries to melt away. I am in my happy place by the sea, and it is where I feel most at one with the universe and all my worries seem insignificant in comparison with the vastness of the ocean.

3 — Mindful Outdoor Activities

Engage in outdoor activities that foster mindfulness and connection with nature. Try gardening, where you can cultivate plants while mindfully observing the beauty of their growth. Explore nearby parks or forests, taking the time to appreciate the vibrant colours, fragrances, and sounds of the natural world. These activities promote relaxation, reduce anxiety, and improve overall well-being. Alternatively, why not just take an activity you normally do from inside to out? Yoga on the patio, preparing vegetables whilst sat in the sun or camping overnight in the garden can all lift these activities to new selfcare heights.

4 — Digital Detox

Give yourself a break from digital devices and embrace the simplicity of the present moment. Designate specific periods of the day or even a whole day as screen-free time. Use this opportunity to engage in activities that nourish your soul, such as reading a book, painting, journaling, or having meaningful conversations with loved ones. Disconnecting from technology allows you to reconnect with yourself and the world around you and the longer days are a great time to give this a go. Why not disconnect completely during your next family BBQ or leave your phone in the hotel room whilst you lay around the pool.

5 — Mindful Eating

Mindful Eating: Savor the flavours and textures of seasonal fruits, vegetables, and other healthy summer delights. Before each meal, take a moment to express gratitude for the nourishment it provides. Eat slowly and mindfully, paying attention to the colours, smells, and tastes. Engage all your senses while enjoying the company of loved ones, creating a harmonious and joyful dining experience. This is also a great one to try if you are fortunate enough to be enjoying the local food in another country. Notice the variety of colours on your plate and savour the taste of each mouthful as if you were taking a snapshot so it can live long in your memory even after the holiday is over.

(Mmm this works well for the local wine too 😊)

6 — Sunset Reflection

If you are in a location that faces west, in the evening, find a peaceful spot to witness the beauty of the setting sun. Sit comfortably and observe the shifting colours and patterns in the sky. Take deep breaths, inhaling the calming energy of the moment. Reflect on the day, acknowledging both its joys and challenges, without dwelling on them. Allow yourself to let go of any lingering tension or worries as the sun sinks below the horizon, symbolising a fresh start.

Mindfulness is a powerful tool for selfcare and promoting a sense of well-being. Whether you're on holiday or incorporating these activities into your daily routine, they offer opportunities to slow down, appreciate the present, and nurture your inner peace. By embracing mindfulness this summer, you can enhance your overall experience, find serenity, and create lasting memories of tranquillity and self-discovery. Embrace the season's magic and make mindfulness an integral part of your summer selfcare plan.

Traveling on holiday should be a time of excitement, relaxation, and rejuvenation. However, for some individuals, anxiety can cast a shadow over the travel experience. From the stress of driving with a partner who makes you anxious to navigating airports, flying, and other modes of transportation, various aspects of travel can trigger anxiety.
