Five Essential Oils to Boost Your Wellbeing This Winter

As the colder days draw in and the nights grow longer, it's essential to prioritise self care and wellbeing. One simple and effective way to naturally uplift your mood, protect your skin, and create a cozy atmosphere at home is by incorporating the use of essential oils into your winter routine. Here are five must-have essential oils to help you stay invigorated and refreshed throughout the chilly season.

NB. If you have a medical condition please consult a clinical aromatherapist before using essential oils at home.

My preferred brand of essential oils to use are Neal’s Yard Remedies as their oils are 100% natural and organic and sourced from the most ethical and sustainable sources. Cheaper oils may contain synthetic chemicals to enhance the scent artificially.

1 — Citrus Oils for Mood Elevation

The darker, colder days can sometimes take a toll on our overall mood and energy levels. To combat this, consider incorporating citrus oils into your daily wellness routine. Oils such as sweet orange, lemon, and grapefruit are renowned for their uplifting and invigorating properties. Their vibrant and fresh scents can help alleviate feelings of lethargy and promote a positive, energized mindset, making them perfect companions during the winter blues. Add a few drops to an aromatherapy diffuser so you can breathe in their uplifting scent in your living room or home office. Or why not add a few drops to a base oil such as almond or grapeseed so you can massage them into your skin or use a citrus-based body butter such as the Bee Lovely Body Butter*.

2 — Protective Oils for Winter Skin

Harsh winter weather can often leave our skin feeling dry and lackluster. Combat this issue by introducing protective essential oils into your skincare routine. Look for oils like neroli, frankincense and rosehip, which are known for their moisturizing and nourishing properties.

Consider booking a holistic facial with me to try out the radiance boosting benefits of rosehip in the Wild Rose Glow skincare range or the hydrating power of protective frankincense for yourself.

These oils can help soothe and protect the skin from the harsh elements, ensuring it remains hydrated and radiant throughout the winter months.

3 — Aromatic Oils for a Homely Ambiance

Creating a warm and inviting atmosphere at home is crucial for maintaining a sense of comfort and relaxation during the winter season. Aromatic oils such as cinnamon, clove, and pine can instantly infuse your living space with a cozy and festive ambiance. Their familiar and comforting scents evoke feelings of nostalgia and warmth, making your home the perfect retreat from the chilly outdoor weather. You only have to think about the comforting scent of an apple and cinnamon crumble baking in the oven to know what I mean!

Spicy oils also blend well with citrus (see above) so why not experiment with combinations such as mandarin and clove*, frankincense and orange or lemon and ginger for total winter wellbeing.

4 — Oils for colds and congestion

Winter often brings with it a host of energy sapping challenges, including coughs, colds, congestion and stuffiness. Combat these issues by incorporating eucalyptus or tea tree oil into your wellness routine. These powerful essential oils are renowned for their ability to clear the sinuses and support respiratory health, making them invaluable tools for maintaining clear and unobstructed breathing during the colder months. Simply add a few drops to a bowl of steaming water, cover your head and the bowl with a towel and breathe in their cleansing aromas for a few minutes. You can also add a few drops to your diffuser placed in the bedroom to help you breathe more easily at night.

5 — Peppermint Oil for Enhanced Focus and as a spider repellent

Maintaining focus and concentration can be challenging when the winter weather leaves us feeling sluggish and fatigued. Peppermint oil* is an excellent solution for boosting mental clarity and enhancing focus. Its refreshing and invigorating aroma can help stimulate the mind, improve cognitive function, and increase overall alertness, ensuring you stay productive and engaged throughout the winter season. It is also great for keeping spiders out of your home as they try to come in from the cold. Add a few drops to water in a spray bottle and spritz around door and window frames.

Incorporating some of these essential oils into your winter selfcare routine can significantly enhance your overall wellbeing and help you navigate the colder months with a renewed sense of energy and vitality. Prioritize your health and happiness this winter by harnessing the power of these natural and aromatic wonders.

Stay warm, stay healthy, and stay happy this winter!
