What is self-compassion and why is it so important?

In a fast-paced and demanding world, it's all too easy to be hard on ourselves. We often strive for perfection, berating ourselves for our flaws and shortcomings. However, amidst this self-criticism, lies an invaluable practice that can transform our relationship with ourselves and foster wellbeing—self-compassion.

In this blog, I will explore what self-compassion is, its benefits, and offer you a simple self-compassion mindful exercise to incorporate into your daily routine.

What is Self-Compassion?

Self-compassion is the art of treating ourselves with kindness, understanding, and acceptance, especially during times of struggle, failure, or pain. It involves recognizing our own humanity and acknowledging that we all experience imperfections, challenges, and difficulties.

Basically, it is about treating ourselves in the same way we would a good friend if they were experiencing the same challenges.

Unlike self-esteem, which often hinges on external validation and comparisons, self-compassion is an internal process rooted in self-care and self-acceptance.

Benefits of Self-Compassion:

1 — Reduces Self-Criticism

Self-compassion allows us to let go of harsh self-judgment and embrace a more forgiving and understanding attitude towards ourselves. This shift in mindset can significantly reduce the detrimental effects of self-criticism on our emotional well-being.

2 — Enhances Resilience

By offering ourselves compassion in the face of failure or adversity, we develop resilience. Self-compassion helps us bounce back from setbacks, learn from our mistakes, and move forward with renewed strength and determination.

Engaging in self-compassion practices has been linked to lower levels of anxiety, depression, and stress. It fosters a sense of inner calm, self-acceptance, and emotional stability, allowing us to navigate life's challenges with greater ease.

By practicing self-compassion we also cultivate more understanding and empathy for others so when they react harshly or unjustly towards us we are able to think more kindly of them and not see their behaviour as a reflection on us. It also makes us a happier, more positive person to be around which strengthens connections and reduces loneliness.   

Self-Compassion Mindful Exercise:

Here's a simple self-compassion exercise you can practice anytime, anywhere:

  1. Find a quiet and comfortable space. Sit or lie down in a relaxed position, taking a few deep breaths to settle your mind and body.

  2. Start by bringing your attention to your breath. Notice the sensation of each inhale and exhale, allowing yourself to fully experience the present moment.

  3. Direct your focus inward and identify any negative or self-critical thoughts that may arise. Instead of suppressing or engaging with them, acknowledge their presence with gentleness and non-judgment.

  4. Imagine yourself as a dear friend or loved one who is experiencing the same struggles or challenges. Generate feelings of compassion and understanding towards this person. It may help to place a hand over your heart area to feel the warmth of these more compassionate thoughts and feelings.

  5. Now, shift your focus back to yourself, recognizing that you too deserve the same compassion and understanding. Repeat a self-compassionate phrase or mantra, such as "May I be kind to myself" or "I am deserving of love and compassion."

  6. Allow these compassionate feelings to flow through you, enveloping yourself in a warm and nurturing embrace. Take a few moments to savour this experience, basking in the loving kindness you are extending towards yourself.

  7. When you are ready, gently open your eyes and carry this self-compassionate mindset with you throughout your day, responding to challenges and setbacks with kindness and understanding.

Self-compassion is a powerful practice that enables us to cultivate a deep sense of self-worth, resilience, and emotional well-being. If you’ve spent years being critical of yourself though it can be a difficult skill to master.
