The Buzz About Bees: How They Contribute to your Wellbeing

Bees - those small, industrious creatures buzzing around our gardens and fields - might seem like insignificant insects, but their impact on our wellbeing goes far beyond just producing honey or making us think of a lovely, warm summer’s day.

Bees are vital pollinators. They facilitate the reproduction of flowering plants by transferring pollen from one flower to another, enabling the plants to produce fruits and seeds.

Without bees, many of the foods we rely on, including fruits, nuts, and vegetables, would become scarce or disappear altogether. Albert Einstein is rumoured to have said: “If the bee disappeared off the face of the earth, man would have only four years of life left” – a sombre thought indeed.

Moreover, bees' contribution to agriculture extends beyond food. Many crops grown for their essential oils, such as medicinal flowers and herbs, rely on bee pollination. These essential oils are not only prized for their aromatic qualities, but also for their therapeutic properties in aromatherapy.

Plants like lavender and chamomile calm and soothe, while extracts from fruits like lemon and orange uplift the mood. By pollinating these plants, bees indirectly support the production of essential oils that can enhance our overall wellness.

One brand that understands the importance of bees and harnesses the benefits of aromatherapy is Neal's Yard Remedies Organic, which I have been proud to work alongside since 2020 as an Independent Consultant.

All of their skincare, bath and body products are organic, natural and fragranced with pure essential oils - so while you are cleansing and nourishing your skin, you can also be supporting your physical and emotional wellbeing – it’s a win, win in my book!

One of my favourite ranges is the ‘Bee Lovely’*. The uplifting scents of orange and mandarin in these hand and body care products instantly transport you to a happy place of warmth and sunshine - even on the bleakest of British winter days.

It’s a family favourite too as the cute bee design, gender neutral scent and cost-saving larger sizes are appealing to the whole family – from the smallest of children through to grandparents. They make popular gifts for teenage nieces, sisters, aunts and mother-in-laws alike.

I love that Neal's Yard Remedies Organic is also committed to sustainability and ethical sourcing, ensuring that their Bee Lovely range supports bee populations and respects the environment. Unlike other brands, they do not smoke the bees out of their hives in order to harvest the honey for their products. They simply wait until the bees naturally move on to find another hive and then take whatever they have left behind.

Three per cent of the proceeds from sales of the Bee Lovely range are donated every year to support bee charities. The company have also long been involved in lobbying the Government to ban toxic pesticides that decimate the bee population and threaten their entire existence.

By choosing products like these, you not only indulge in luxurious skincare but also contribute to the preservation of bees and their crucial role in our ecosystem. The products are all organic and natural too so you can be sure you aren’t absorbing harmful chemicals through your skin or washing them down the plughole into our oceans.
