Can Reiki Improve My Sleep?

Reiki is just woo woo isn’t it?

My journey to recovering from insomnia began with Reiki. If I am honest, I had no idea what Reiki was or how it worked, and I was more than a bit sceptical that it could help.

After all, how could it help me when the practitioner wouldn’t even touch me, and frankly nothing else I’d tried had worked so far… and I’d tried lots!

Then I thought… what have I got to lose?

It only took one session, and I was convinced. That incredibly deep sense of relaxation was something I hadn’t felt… well, for what seemed like forever. Immediately after the session ended, I immediately felt lighter and wide awake, like I’d just slept for a full night. And that very night, I slept like the proverbial baby for the first time in months, probably even years.

It doesn’t just work for me though. So many of my reiki clients actually nod off during their treatment and nearly all of them report sleeping better afterwards!

Here are 5 tips on how Reiki can improve you sleep:

1 — Promoting Deep Relaxation

Reiki promotes deep relaxation, which in turn allows your body to reset its own sleep clock. It is common for clients to say after their treatment that they haven't felt that relaxed for years and even if they didn't actually nod off, they feel as refreshed at the end as if they had slept for a full night.

2 — Switching Off

Reiki helps an over-active mind to switch off and reduce mental clutter. Over-arousal is the most common cause of poor sleep and reiki helps your brain to switch off.

3 — Support Emotional Wellbeing

Reiki helps reduce stress and supporting emotional wellbeing. Our busy, modern lifestyles mean many of us live in a state of perpetual if low level stress which is not helpful for healthy sleep.

4 — Reduce Stress

Reiki can help to dissipate tension, or negative energy, stored in parts of the body such as glands and muscles. We all have our favourite places to store our stress - tense shoulders, upset tummy etc. Vast amounts of stress hormones in the system can also become 'stuck' and lead to organs and glands such as those regulating our sleep becoming out of balance.

5 — Inner Peace

In Japanese culture, from where we inherit the practice, Reiki is believed to integrate body and mind and gradually lead us towards a state of more permanent inner peace and therefore better sleep.

As I know myself, Reiki can improve sleep on its own but is even more powerful when combined with specific behavioural and lifestyle changes.

This is why I combine a set of three Reiki sessions (in person or virtual) with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia and relaxation exercises in my Sleep Coaching and Treatment Programme. This unique, three-pronged approach is what works for me and it could for you too.
